Varicose Vein Laser Therapy

In times past when somebody had varicose veins they either had to live with them, or they could have vein stripping surgery where the doctor went in and cut out the affected vein. This was risky because of the risk of anesthesia and could be costly because it was done in an operating room. With vein stripping surgery there is also the chance of the development of a blood clot which could prove to be a dangerous situation.

Varicose vein laser therapy is widely becoming the most popular choice of therapy for both varicose and spider veins. With spider vein laser therapy the laser does not have to penetrate very deep below the skin and the results are usually quite good. The procedure can be done in the doctor’s office and there is little, if no recovery time. It is simple and quick and often just one visit to the doctor’s office will do the trick. For those spider veins that are more severe it may take more than one visit to completely rid yourself of the problem.

Laser surgery for varicose veins involves delivering laser energy to the precise location of the vein through a laser fiber that is passed through a sheath. The sheath guides the laser to the proper location and does not damage any of the surrounding area. The laser is fired throughout the vein and causes irreversible damage to the venous tissue. The laser is gradually withdrawn through the vein until the entire area has been treated. The permanent damage to the vein causes the vein to dry up and die.

Varicose vein laser therapy is preferred by most doctors because it has relatively no side effects and there is no need to put the patient to sleep to perform the procedure. Patients walk out of the doctor’s office that same day and can return to their normal lives. Some people may feel a slight prick or pinch at the point the laser contacts the skin but this is usually very minor. Afterwards there may be a slight burning sensation but usually there is no medication required for pain.

Patients should always wait at least three months after giving birth before undergoing varicose vein laser therapy. The body goes through a lot of changes right after birth and the varicose veins could very well go away on their own after you give birth.

Varicose veins will usually get worse over time and will eventually get to the point that they are so painful that the patient will have to seek some type of help. Varicose vein laser therapy is performed in the doctor’s office with only a local anesthetic to numb the area where the sheath is inserted. The patient may experience some soreness to the area but this is something that usually goes away rather quickly. There is no reason that the patient cannot get on with their normal life by the next day. The procedure is quick and painless and will provide you relief from your everyday pain and burning that is often associated with varicose veins.
