More Varicose Vein Information
Varicose veins occur in 50% of people age 50 and over. Varicose veins
are enlarged veins that can be flesh colored, dark purple or blue
and often look like cords and appear twisted and bulging. They are
swollen and raised above the surface of the skin usually on the calves
or inside of the leg. Spider veins are similar but smaller, looking
like tree branches or spider webs with their short jagged lines. They
are often red or blue, closer to the surface of the skin and found
on the face as well as the legs. Fortunately varicose vein removal
is possible.
If you are suffering from varicose veins, you will be keen to find
out what varicose vein treatments are available:
• Sclerothapy is a common treatment where a solution is injected
into the vein causing the vein walls to swell, stick together and
then seal shut. This prevents the flow of blood and the vein turns
into scar tissue, fading after a few weeks.
• Laser surgery is where very strong bursts of light are sent
onto the vein which in turn sends out laser energy that shrinks
and seals the vein wall. Healthy veins around the closed vein restore
the normal blood flow.
• Surgical ligation and stripping is where problematic veins
are tied shut and completely removed from the leg. This surgery
requires either local or general anesthesia and is done in an operating
room.
• Ambulatory Phlebectomy is where a special light source marks
the location of the vein and tiny cuts are made in the skin so that
surgical hooks can pull the vein out of the leg. A local or general
anesthetic is required.
• Endoscopic vein surgery is where a small video camera is
used to see inside the veins which are then removed through small
cuts. This procedure also requires a local or general anesthetic.
• If you prefer to go the natural route, you can use a healing
natural oils product as these are specially formulated from pure
essential oils to eliminate varicose veins or spider veins anywhere
on the body in a safe, gentle and painless way in the comfort of
your own home. Moms-to-be and nursing mothers will be pleased to
know that such a product is perfectly safe for them to use.
Many women develop varicose veins during pregnancy. It is estimated
that the figure could be as high as 40% but many varicose veins
that develop during pregnancy usually disappear afterwards. If you
are pregnant, you can help prevent the onset of varicose veins by:
• Getting plenty of rest.
• Sleeping on your left side so that you decrease the pressure
on the vena cava vein which carries the largest amount of blood
through the body.
• Keeping your feet elevated as much as you can.
• Using maternity hose to prevent blood from gathering in
your lower legs.
• Exercising frequently, avoiding crossing your legs when
sitting and not standing for long periods.
• Keeping within the recommended weight range for your stage
of pregnancy.
• Eating a low salt diet rich in high fiber foods.
